Folliculitis Treatment

A proper plan for folliculitis treatment requires that you have full knowledge about the condition.

Folliculitis is basically an infection of the follicle of the hair. A follicle is the tiny skin pocket from which a single hair grows out.

This infection to the follicle will occur when the bacteria that is always present on the skin enters into the follicle.

Prominent folliculitis symptoms include redness, raised bumps or itching along with a white, pus-filled top. Refer to the vast number of folliculitis photos on the web to see what this looks like.

Folliculitis treatment

A folliculitis cure will depend on a series of factors such as folliculitis causes, the extent of the infection, location of the infection and so on.

Medication options for folliculitis treatment include antiseptics, antibiotic creams and antibiotic tablets.

When learning how to treat folliculitis, it is first important to know how much your condition has worsened and also which type of folliculitis are you suffering from.

Mild cases

Mild folliculitis can be easily treated using antiseptic creams. In addition, you can use a moisturizer or soap substitute that contain an antibacterial agent for the purpose. Some especially formulated products include Dermol® Shower Emollient, Dermol ® 600 Bath emollient and Oilatum® Plus.

In the cases of fungal folliculitis, you can use antifungal shampoos like ketconazole twice a day. Such formulations can also prevent further complications related to folliculitis, hair loss and the like.

Similarly, even if the area of folliculitis is small enough, it can be treated with an oral application of an antibiotic cream. In fact, in some cases mild folliculitis will actually clear out on its own without any medication.

Severe folliculitis

In a situation where you seem to be suffering from chronic folliculitis, your GP might put you on a course of antibiotic tablets such as erythromycin or flucloxacillin.

Home remedies and tips

Apart from the typical medications, there are also a series of home remedies you can use for treatment of folliculitis. A few of these include:

• Applying a warm compress to the infected area.
• Wash the infected area regularly with an anti-bacterial soap.
• Make a soothing cream by using oatmeal lotion and apply.
• Wash your clothes regularly.
• Stop shaving the area till infection subsides.
• Wear loose, cotton clothing.
• Stay dry and sweat free as far as possible.
Aloe Vera leaf gel can be placed directly on the problem areas. This soothes the skin and helps the skin heal itself quicker.
Garlic placed topically on the skin can destroy bacteria that causes the infection.
