Vegetable Masks and Lotions

Vegetable masks and lotions are the best types of treatment for sensitive or damaged skin, because they are anti-inflammatory. Vegetables are also cooling and soothing and provide Vitamin A, which heals the skin. Vegetable masks are therefore perfect for Acne, eczema, sunburn, but can be used for cleansing and feeding the skin too.

The most popular vegetables used for skin are cabbage, carrot, cucumber, lettuce, potato, parsley and watercress.

The fresher the ingredients, the better. Organic is best!

Vegetables can be added to many other ingredients to create masks and lotions, and are often incorporated into a clay mask.

Cooked lettuce and cabbage are sometimes cooled, pureed and used as a mask. The water that they are cooked in can be applied as a lotion.

Ingredients such as potato flour are often added to masks as a thickening agent.

Important note!

Avoid the use of metal bowls and mixing utensils as they might oxidise when they come into contact with your vegetable juices.

For Normal Skin

Honey and Cucumber Milk

  • 6 medium cucumber slices
  • 2 tbsp raw organic honey
  • 1 tbsp full cream milk

(can only be stored for 6 hours in the refrigerator)

Peel the cucumber and remove the seeds. Puree the flesh of the cucumber. Strain the pulp through muslin cloth. Stir in the honey and milk. Apply evenly to your clean face and neck. Leave on for at least 15 minutes, rinse off with filtered water Pat dry with clean towel.

This recipes used on a regular basis will cleanse, feed, hydrate and reduce inflammation.


For Dry Skin

Yogurt and carrot juice mask

  • 1 tbsp of carrot juice or 2 tbsp of grated carrot
  • 2 tbsp live organic plain yogurt.
  • 1 tbsp of sweet almond oil or wheatgerm oil
  • 1 tbsp of organic honey

Mix all ingredients together. Apply to clean face and neck, leave on for at least 15 minutes. Rinse off with filtered water Pat dry with clean towel.

This mask will feed, balance the skin’s PH, heal the skin, hydrate and prevent aging.


Oily Skin and Combination Skin

Clay and Cucumber Cleansing Mask

  • ½ cucumber
  • ½ grapefruit
  • 2 tbsp white or green clay powder

(can only be kept 8 hours in refrigerator)

This mask will cleanse, reduce inflammation, tone.

How to apply this mask

  1. Remove all makeup. Use a natural cleanser to clean the skin.
  2. Steam your face for 2 minutes over a bowl of hot water.
  3. Apply the mask evenly. Avoid the eyes.
  4. Apply a second layer, if the first one was very thin.
  5. Do not laugh, talk or move your facial muscles while the mask is drying.
  6. Rinse your face to soften the clay. Remove from forehead downwards with cotton wool, avoiding contact with eyes. Be gentle.
  7. Use a hydrolat to close the pores.


Aging Skin

Vitamin Mask

  • 2 tbsp carrot juice
  • 5 tbsp wheatgerm oil
  • 2 tbsp organic honey
  • 2 tbsp plain live organic yogurt
  • 1 tsp potato flour

(Can be kept for 6 hours in the refrigerator)

Mix all ingredients. If too runny add more potato flour, if too thick add more carrot juice. Apply to clean face and neck, leave on for at least 15 minutes. Rinse off with filtered water Pat dry with clean towel.

This mask will nourish, heal, prevent aging, balance the PH of skin.


Some Ingredients that can be Added to your Vegetable Face Packs

  • Barley – Cooked or barley water. Barley contains Azelaic acid which is a proven anti-acne compound. Therefore it can also help reduce age spots. The high levels of Anthocyanins in barley help to slow down aging.   Source: HealthWithFood
  • Dairy – Full cream milk and organic live yogurt will balance and cleanse the skin.

  • Oats – Oats can be used to nourish and/or to thicken a mask.
  • Pollen – Powdered pollen is great for healing the skin and fights against aging.
