Cataract Surgery Cost

What is Cataract Surgery?
Cataract surgeries involve removing the lens of the eye that has become cloudy, and in most cases replace it with a clear artificial lens.

Cataracts surgery is very common and a safe procedure. The surgery is performed by an eye doctor (Ophthalmologist) and you don’t have to stay in the hospital after the surgery.

How Much Does Cataract Surgery Cost?

The price of the surgery can differ because of things like medical aid, type of lens you need and the hospital.

If you have a medical aid, the surgery will be covered at medical aid rates. The bad news is medical aids only cover a standard lens (monofocal Intra-Ocular lens)

If you don’t have a medical aid, you will need to pay for the surgery.
If you are not on Medical Aid, surgery will cost you: ± $1500 (R15000) per eye,

The surgery price includes:

●    Standard monofocal IOL.

●    Other theatre disposables.

●    Theatre and day ward fees.

●    Surgeons’ fee.

●    Anaesthetic fee.

●    Post op medicines on discharge.

●    Two post op checks.

After the cataract surgery, it is necessary to get the artificial lens a fine tune with an eximer laser, the cost will be ± $500 (R5 000) per eye. But then you will have a guarantee that it will give you the best possible vision.

Cataract Surgery Complications

Complications after cataract surgery are relatively uncommon. It is very rare that the surgeon is unable to remove the entire lens, if it happens, it will be necessary for a follow up surgery to remove the rest of the fragments of the lens.

Very rare complications can include bleeding or infection and can lead to permanent vision difficulties.

Some of the Complications that can Happen Include:

●    Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) – PVD is more problematic withyounger patients, because the patients older than 60 have already gone through PVD. It does not threaten the vision directly, but threatens the development after the surgery.

●    Toxic Anterior Segment Syndrome (TASS) – Is a non-infectious inflammatory condition that can be followed by cataract surgery. It can be treated with topical corticosteroids in high doses.
